Binding: paperback
River of Tears enters the heart of the two women in the life of
an impassioned man who took part in the massacre at Bute Inlet.
It explores the impact of the coming of the white man on this one
family and the circumstances that prompted the Chilcotin Indians
to kill. Piele, the husband, father and son, works on Alfred
Waddington's grandiose "highway to heaven" from Bute Inlet to the
goldfields in Interior BC - and pays the price. It is with the
two women that we share the adventure, the anguish, and the
love.
Author Biography: Maud Emery was the author of three books. The other two are A Seagull's Cry, published in 1975, and Jean Pauline, An Indian Tragedy, published in 1976. She passed away March 4, 1992, having retired from her life's work as secretary to lawyers, insurance agents, and real estate companies, as well as secretary to the municipalities of Courtenay and Campbell River. Mrs. Emery made in-depth studies of fish and wildlife, and of the histories of early BC families. Her work has appeared in many publications, including The Western Producer, the magazine section of the Province, Western Fish and Wildlife, and , of course, the Victoria Colonist.
