LaSalle and the Exploration of the Mississippi
The great French explorer helped carve out an enormous wilderness
empire for his country. After exploring along the Great Lakes
and the Illinois River, in 1681 La Salle sailed down the
Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico -- claiming the vast
region for his king, calling it Louisiana.
His efforts to start a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi
turned to disaster, and he was murdered by two of his own men in
1687. Despite this, he remains one of the most important figures
in the French exploration of North America.
