Description:
Since the end of the Vatican Council, questions have been raised ì about issues of authority, obedience, and freedom within the ì Church. New methodologies of scriptural analysis and increasing ì sophistication in the social sciences have sometimes been ì employed in public controversy and have generated private debate ì on the nature and source of Church authority, as well as the ì degree and kind of obedience expected of the people of God. The ì goal of this book is to look at the need for authority and ì obedience, the role of personal freedom in the context of ì obedience, how structures of authority have developed, and how ì they currently function within the Church. This text includes an ì overview of authority, obedience, and freedom, applications of ì freedom's need for authority and obedience, and the relationship ì between authority and service. Discussion questions follow each ì section. Such questions include, for example, "When in your ì experience was authority needed to decide between a number of ì good options for dealing with a community need?" and "Do you ì agree with the general principle that the Catholic intellectuals ì do not have the right to freedom of speech within their teaching ì specialty, but only a right to practice their scholarly ì discipline? Why or why not?"
